Letter of Protest

Dear Mr. President,

We feel deep sorrow and great indignation over your country’s 18th subcritical nuclear test, which was conducted at the testing site in Nevada on August 29, 2002.

Since last fall, military operations have been carried out in Afghanistan as retaliation for the September 11th attacks, and many innocent civilians have been tragically killed in this so-called “War against Terrorism.” Your country has dramatically increased its military budget to build up armaments for this continuing violence. We are afraid that such actions of the U. S. will result in further suffering and tragedies in the future.

Nuclear weapons cannot deter conflicts! Nothing will be solved through military power! It is unforgivable to continue testing nuclear weapons, fully knowing their dreadful power. Your repeated testing tramples on our hope for peace.

What is urgently needed for us today is to realize a world in which all people can live together, recognizing each other’s differences in nationality, ethnicity and culture. As Buddhists who cherish all life and share such hopes, we strongly protest against your country’s recent nuclear test, which goes contrary to our peaceful expectation and impair the dignity of life. Therefore, we urge you to stop the further testing immediately, and instead strive for the elimination of all nuclear arms.

Sincerely yours,
Takashi Miura
Chief Administrator
